I believe that many of the insights we gained travelling across eastern Europe and Asia in the 1970s, shaped the way in which we would live our lives on our return. Although we experienced fear, frustration and incomprehension during our travels, we also experienced unexpected compassion and hospitality, often from complete strangers. As the trip progressed, I began to realise just how lucky we were to live in Western Europe. We had the challenges of unemployment, debt and social unrest, not dissimilar to the challenges facing the young of today, but we had youth on our side and we believed we could help shape a better future.
